Abstract
Retaining health care personnel in public hospital organisations is a global challenge, causing
problems in securing stabile, high quality health care. Organizational commitment and retention are
influenced by various political, institutional, and societal conditions, but also by health care
professionals’ perceptions of and satisfaction with their leader. However, overview of existing
knowledge about the interplay between leadership and retention in public hospital organizations is
challenged by studies developing within different, scientific fields with scarce cross-fertilization.
Based on an integrative systematic review of 5090 international studies, published between 2000
and 2022, this article provides overview of existing knowledge about the impact of leadership on
retention and organizational commitment of health care professionals.
