N2 - The paper is an investigation of aspects of the archetype of spirit that are represented by a female image. To this end, the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin is discussed. It is shown that the image of dragons represents a primal and wild aspect of the human spirit. Through an image of a wounded girl-child who embodies the dragon-energy, spirit is reborn from below. The girl mediates between the world of spirit and the material world. Renewed consciousness of the reality of a spiritual realm redeems the materialism and inflated belief in human power of our time.
