Abstract
This panel presents methods of arts, activism and aesthetics that confront global mobility by inserting itself in nomadic and marginal dynamics. In search for new perspectives on citizenship, mobility and becoming the panel aims to question conventional ways of approaching identity and citizenship by reframing citizenship as a mode of performance and expression.
The panel takes departure in the production of the art collective Jamboy and their work conducted within the fields of Performance Design and Urbanism at Roskilde University. The presented works will among others span across participatory filmmaking with an Eritrean community in their temporary stay in an out-of-use retirement home, poster collaborations created with informal vendors in Mumbai, Turin, Copenhagen and Buenos Aires, and an outdoor football streaming event created with a Nigerian community settled in a public park in Copenhagen. Common for these projects are their diverse attempts to form participatory designs that reactivate spaces of global boundaries and potentials. They bring forth ways of diverging and questioning contemporary mobility in regard to the ‘margin’ and open up possibilities of intercultural encounters.
The aim of the presentation is to share the participatory and socio-aesthetic character of each projects to elaborate on methods and complexities in social and ephemeral design and furthermore to address the potentials and issues of rights and citizenship through the lenses of participatory performance design and visual methods.
In doing this the panel will discuss the projects in the context of university learning, as an elaborative method of the academic world where explorative social and creative engagement with the fields of study proposes situated contemporary socio-ecological changes. The panel will take the format of a bricolage of films, academic interventions, reflections and responses to the presented works. In relation to the panel we will suggest that a selection of Jamboy’s short films will be installed at the conference as looped screenings.

Andet | The purpose of the conference is to explore contemporary issues around boundary crossing, as they relate to universities and learning, broadly conceived.

This conference is dedicated to the memory of our colleague Professor L.H.M. “Lily” Ling, a founding member of the Critical Edge Alliance, who tragically passed away last year. The conference is designed in the spirit of Ling’s Silk Road Research Initiative, a research collective that pursued the re-imagination of world politics.

As part of that work, students and faculty from The New School (New York, NY) organized in 2013 around a shared vision: to transform the foundation that underpins today’s international system by thinking creatively about world politics. |
