Sitting by Grundtvig’s church, close to where gallows used to stand in the Middle Ages, I trace the white-yellow bricks that the church is made of and the Danish civic conscience/consciousness (samfundssind) mobilized in this time of COVID19. The same type of bricks were used for the apartment buildings surrounding the church, built for Danish society’s working class to enable lives full of light, air and cleanliness in the beginning of 20th century. These buildings include a nearby housing area known as “From cradle to the grave”: all important institutions were at an arm’s length, so one would never have to leave the area.
