Abstract
The reaction of 4-methylpyridine and 4-tert-butylpyridine with iodine was studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The reaction was studied in liquid non-polar solvents (CS2, CCl4) and in low density polyethylene. Unlike the situation in the liquid solvents, the main products of the reaction between the pyridine derivatives and iodine in the polyethylene matrix are ionic species. Probably the cavities in the stretched polymer catalyse the ionic reaction. The results of the FTIR spectroscopic study indicate the presence of bis(4-tert-butylpyridinium)iodonium polyiodide. Theoretical calculations using the density function B3LYP/DGDZVP give results consistent with the proposed structure. The reaction of 4-methylpyridine with iodine reveals a complex mechanism of reaction that produces many forms of products (cations, oligomers).
