Abstract

The article compares and discusses the programme objectives of French
compared to students’ personal objectives in primary and secondary school. The
language teaching objectives are of course many and this may complicate students’ and teachers’ collaboration: is it mostly important to learn oral or written communication, grammar, text interpretation, culture or something else? And in which order? According to a recent study, Danish students focus mostly on oral communication, and a good part of them imagine that for this they need to master grammar; at the same time, they seem little conscientious about the cultural dimension. Since there seems to actually exist a tendency to separate form and meaning and to study language outside its cultural context, it gets more and more urgent to apply or develop new and more conversation and text oriented pedagogical and didactic methods which might contribute to motivate
students to learn foreign languages. These integral methods can be based on analyses and results of conversational analysis, discourse analysis and ethno-pragmatics.
