Abstract
The dominance of English poses a challenge in a couple of ways, including the fact that fluency in English gives a symbolic advantage (everything else being equal) to those who have English as their native language – and conversely disadvantages those who have English as their second or even third language. The dominance of the English language tends to be accompanied by certain cultural and conceptual meanings. I will analyse these challenges with Swaan’s theory (2001) about a world language system and languages as a specific form of cultural capital – namely linguistic capital. I will discuss the implication the dominance of English could have for research discussion.
