Forests and access to energy in the context of climate change: The role of the woodfuel sector in selected INDCs in sub-Saharan Africa

This article examines the importance of the wood energy sector in selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the degree to which the sustainability of the sector is prioritized in the formulation of climate change policies. In these countries, as with many others in SSA, per capita consumption of woodfuels is higher than the global average. It analyses the extent to which the wood energy sector is reflected in selected countries? Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) under the specific adaptation and mitigation priorities and targets. The INDCs are in the process of becoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with some having achieved this objective.
