Abstract
This paper explores a hospice as context for relatives’ emotional
management. Based on a field study the findings
reveal that an institutionalized approach of open emotional
awareness of dying attempts to influence relatives’
emotional behaviour. While some relatives’ emotional
management strategies are in tune with this ideal for good
dying others tend to ‘silently’ avoid it.
