Abstract
The 2024 European Parliament elections in Denmark resulted in the Green Left gaining the largest vote share, surpassing the Social Democrats, while the Liberal Party faced losses, but maintained its role as the largest centre-right party. Eleven of Denmark's twelve parliamentary parties participated, with ten winning at least one of the 15 seats, marking a historically diverse representation in the European Parliament. Like in the 2019 EP elections, the results now largely mirror the national election. There is no longer a separate party system in EU matters. Despite the EU’s Spitzenkandidat process and common EU issues like defence and climate change gaining attention, Danish campaigns remained largely focused on national concerns, reflecting the ‘second-order’ nature of the election. Media coverage also revolved around national topics, discussing EU politics from a domestic perspective.
