Abstract
Cities are not what they used to be. Rather than dense, integrated spaces, new urban developments all around the planet produce sprawling and segregated areas that might look like cities but which are not necessarily actual cities. Richard Sennett and Saskia Sassen are two of the world’s leading sociologists, working with the urban environment and the human condition from different but overlapping perspectives. In this conversation they emphasize that architects and planners and everybody else working with the city should focus on the process of making and sharpen their understanding of what a city really is, and why it matters.
