Abstract
Chinese scholars have shown how a negative discourse have emerged surrounding Chinese tourists (Hua 2014; Jinliang & Hong 2013; Wenwu 2014). The presence of such a discourse and its damaging nature is further illustrated by the Chinese government’s reaction to it. Chinese Prime Minister Wang Yang and President Xi Jinping have addressed the behavior publicly, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) has published a series of guidelines on appropriate behavior and the Chinese government has passed legislation that makes it possible to blacklist tourists who exhibit particularly bad behavior. The negative discourse and the Chinese government’s reaction to it are the focus of this paper. Three main research questions was addressed: Where does the negative discourse around Chinese tourists’ behavior originate? How is it present in Chinese and English language media respectively? What is the effect of the Chinese government’s reaction to it?
