Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into the theory and practice of organizational communication, leading to new and important questions for the field: what is AI? What are its practical implications for the communication professional? And which ethical issues arise from the integration of AI in organizational communication? In this chapter, we offer initial answers to these foundational questions and consider how they affect the field. That is, which opportunities and challenges AI bring to organizational communication. To do so, we indicate how AI is refiguring the flows of communicative constitution of organization, bringing new opportunities and challenges with it. And we argue that framing this refiguration in terms of human-centric, transparent, and explainable human-technology relations may help overcome risks and realize potentials of AI implementation. On this basis, we consider the theoretical, methodological, and practical implications of AI in organizational communication.
