Abstract
4-Acetylphenanthrene (Ia), a sterically hindered ketone possessing some interesting properties, 1 has been available only by an eleven-stage synthesis from naphthalene in 2.3% overall yield.2 4-Cyanophenanthrene (Ib) has recently become available by a new preparative route,3 which, since it involves the use of amine perchlorates, is not to be recommended.4 In any case, conversion of the nitrile (Ib) to the ketone (Ia) would be very inefficient due to steric hindrance.
