Abstract
This paper gives an overview of Scandinavian design thinking approach, which are currently attracting attention as innovative method to challenge multifaceted societal issues our society has faced. Scandinavia is one of the roots of human-centered design. Scandinavians innovation method, Participatory Design, which involves stakeholders actively in the design process and effectively collaborate with different professionals and knowledge fields is a key. In this paper, we describe how the participatory design method was born and flourished in Scandinavia, what kind of approach it is, and introduce practical examples and the latest research in the field. By understanding the Scandinavian design thinking approach that has been constructed based on a background and ideas different from those in the United States, the paper contributes to practice and a theorisation of Asian design thinking methodology.
