Abstract

This article discusses the role of the intellectual in modern society in relation to the concept of activist social engagement of researchers. A research group from Roskilde University in Denmark formed by Jacob Dahl Rendtorff and Sandra Frost, in collaboration with Reidar Due from the University of Oxford, has just obtained a grant from the Danish Independent Research Fund in order to investigate the problem of “The Ethics and Politics of Free Thought. The role of the public intellectual”. This project must be seen in the context of a growing discussion on the role of the scholar in society, which is accompanied by an in-depth study of the public intellectual within democratic societies.
