    Projekter: ProjektForskning

The project addresses the issue of vulnerability in relation to climate change in Cambodia. National adaptation plans and donor programs often see adaptation as a means to reduce vulnerability towards climate change. The research team takes on an alternative view, where addressing vulnerability is seen as a precondition for adaptation. The difference is less subtle than it might seem at first glance, as it has a number of consequences for the way adaptation is targeted. Instead of trying to design projects as a response to highly uncertain future climate change scenarios, climate change concerned planners should instead target general socioeconomic issues that render local communities vulnerable to external stress factors. Through investigation of past local self-organised adaptations to external stress factors, the project will contribute to a better understanding of how vulnerability can be addressed as a first step towards successful adaptation. Besides fieldwork, the project consists of capacity building workshops and a conference aimed at supporting interdisciplinary research in Cambodia. Research will be organised as joint research between partners, including detailed research planning and fieldwork. The conference will address a broader audience with the aim of informing national and international development planners and actors. Conference papers, website, journal articles and possibly an edited book will be other means of dissemination of results.
