Beskrivelse
Western welfare states are facing a care crisis. The quality and sufficiency of eldercare services are widely criticized, cases of neglect and care scandals regularly surface, and recruitment of care workers has become increasingly difficult. Internationally as well as in Denmark, dignified eldercare has emerged as a new ideal and answer to this crisis. Yet, dignity is a loosely defined, ambiguous term. It’s meaning is historically, culturally, and situationally constructed, and we know little about what dignified eldercare comes to mean in practice. Through ethnographic fieldwork, DIGNICARE will explore what dignity comes to mean, and how it is practiced in initiatives aiming to promote
dignified eldercare in Denmark. Using and developing the concept choreographies of care’, we will study how eldercare is ‘re-choreographed’ with aims to promote dignity and move beyond the care crisis; reshaping care ideals, care practices and care relationships between older persons and care workers.
