Personlig profil

Maarten van Wijhe is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Science and Environment at Roskilde University, Denmark. Since childhood he knew he wanted to study infectious diseases. He followed his interests and in 2013 obtained his Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, specializing in epidemiology.

After as short break he started on a PhD track at the University of Groningen in the summer of 2013 following one of my main interests: vaccinations. His PhD focussed on estimating the historical impact vaccination programmes in terms of mortality and disease averted. Over the next couple of years he and his colleagues managed to compile a large amount of data on infectious disease occurrence, mortality, vaccination coverage, and government expenses on vaccination programmes in the Netherlands. In 2018 he succesfully defended his PhD research (Cum Laude).

His resaearch still focusses on infectious disease modelling, with a strong emphasis on historical epidemics and vaccine-preventable diseases. At Roskilde University Denmark Maarten enjoys supervising students and deepening his interest in outbreaks of infectious diseases and extending this to big data problems. He also has a position at Statens Serum Institute, Denmark where he is a researcher in the REspiratory Syncitial virus Consortium in EUrope (RESCEU) that aims to develop evidence on RSV disease burden.
