My research focuses on two main areas

  • The politics and sociology of academic work
  • Transnational historical approach to global higher education.

Politics and sociology of academic work

I am inquiring into the impact of research performativity and associated systems of performance management, measurement, and professional progression on the nature of academic work.  This research looks particularly on how these processes and political rationalities manifest in Europe's more peripheral higher education systems. This has a specific focus on

  • Linguistic impact - how these processes impact the languages with which and through which academics think and practice
  • Disciplinary impact - how these processes impact different traditions of knowledge work
  • Epistemological impact - how these processes impact the forms of knowledge with which and through which academics think and the nature of their epistemic communities.

This work is in collaboration with partners across Europe including Poland, Greece, Slovenia, Portugal, Finland, Iceland, Spain, and Ireland.

Transnational historical approach to global higher education

I am drawing on the perspective of transnational history to enhance the policy sociology of global higher education.  This involves the articulation between Gramscian informed conjunctural analysis with transnational historical strategies.
