Research in the History of Physics

Martin Niss’s research in the history of physics centers on the development and use of mathematical models in condensed matter physics. A key focus is the historical trajectory of the Lenz–Ising model, which serves as a case study in how simple models can evolve to play central roles in scientific theory. His work examines how this model, initially considered of limited relevance, became foundational in the study of phase transitions and critical phenomena. Through historical analysis, he explores how modeling practices shape scientific understanding and how theoretical frameworks emerge and gain acceptance within the physics community.

Research in Science Education
In science education, Martin Niss investigates how students engage with scientific problems and develop problem-solving competencies, particularly in physics. He studies how students approach complex, open-ended problems in physics as well as how educational environments can support inquiry-based learning, formative assessment, and student agency. His work also includes the challenges students face in applying mathematics within physics contexts and how feedback and peer collaboration can enhance learning outcomes.
