My research examines how electoral geographies influence the competition between regional and populist political parties at the regional level. My work builds on the literature related to European integration, electoral geography, populism, and regionalist party research to thoroughly explore this competition. I focus on key regions including Bavaria, Flanders, Catalonia, and Northern Italy, where regional parties have historically played an important role but are now being challenged by the rise of populist parties. My research also ties into broader discussions about the resilience of regional parties, the role of economic conditions and other material changes in shaping electoral outcomes, and how these dynamics impact national and European governance.
Ultimately, my goal is to provide a clear understanding of the forces that lead to populist party success and how regional parties may be situated to resist such advances.
