Beskrivelse

Workshop “Incarcerated Learning"

In the workshop we shall understand Ethos as the disposition of a local, a place in and around a building with social arrangements and participants. We want to investigate the concept of learning in the social practice of a local. Often learning is connected with teaching and we easily set things to be learned up as something to be taught. This procedure tends to see learning as something given to be implanted into the learner, or as telementation to use a phrase by the linguist Roy Harris. But even with a teacher teaching learning is exploration, investigating possibilities in the given, thereby arriving at new ways of doing things of new insights etc. We can only investigate possibilities by relating to the local, using what is at hand to find out where to go. This means - as Jean Lave has stressed - that learning and development of social practice are two sides of the same thing. To inquire into the strength of learning we want to challenge it by studying how it fares in restricted circumstances, we want to probe incarcerated learning. Since restricted circumstances may be seen to hinder learning, it becomes important to discuss possibilities in the restricted praxis. The concept of contradictions gives an opportunity to deliberate and explore the possibilities in it.
