Beskrivelse
This workshop aims to establish dialogue between researchers who are working in the field of parenting, childhood and interventions. The point of departure for the workshop is the observation, that in recent decades welfare policies have become focused on children as human capital and as an investment that must be protected. Such policies are becoming more instructive and prescriptive and are being used to legitimize state interventions for instance parenting programs in families. This global trend is reflected in Danish political debates which refer to scientific studies linking children’s academic performance to parental resources such as social networks and socioeconomic status. This makes both young children and parents the potential objects of early childhood interventions aiming to minimize risk, and early childhood interventions identify parenting as a decisive factor in fighting inequality have become high politics.
While researchers have worked diligently and extensively on this topic, little dialogue takes place between the different strands of research. In this workshop we will explore the possibilities of creating cooperation and synergies between different research environments that all addressing the same issue.
The workshop, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, will take place on October 22nd and 23rd and include about 20 senior and junior researchers. Two international scholars will give the keynotes:
Professor Mark Feinberg, International Center for Coparenting Policy and Research, Penn State University: Foundations of Family Functioning and Parent/Child Well-being: Coparenting Theory, Intervention and Policy
Professor Ellie Lee, Center for Parenting Culture Studies, Kent University: The Rise of Parenting
The workshop will mainly include scholars from Denmark, but our perspective will be international. Besides the keynotes some of the participants will present their current research, addressing these overall questions:
How does your research relate to risk-preventing policy agendas?
How does your research contribute to the development of interventions targeting the family context?
How are parents’ perspectives, experiences or perceived benefit included in your research?
