Lone Simonsen held a speech on Denmark’s pandemic response strategy during COVID‑19. She presented how Denmark managed to keep infection levels below 10% during the first year of the pandemic, through a combination of non‑pharmaceutical interventions. These included rapid early action, an extensive free mass‑testing program, strong digital surveillance infrastructure, effective contact tracing, and high public trust.
Simonsen explained that while it is difficult to separate the individual impact of each measure, evidence suggests mass testing played a particularly important role in controlling transmission. She also highlighted how Denmark transitioned once vaccines became available, achieving very high coverage among older adults before eventually lifting all NPIs in February 2022. The talk illustrated how the Danish strategy delayed widespread infection until vaccines and boosters were in place, helping prevent severe morbidity and pressure on intensive care units.
