Regulatory challenges for agricultural biotechnology in the EU

During the last two decades, the EU adopted a predominantly precautionary approach to regulation, determining many developments in the biotech sector.These regulatory choices paved the way for an isolated internationally EU allowing the USA to take a leader role and determine the risk-based regulatory affairs, as a first mover. The GMO standards and methods of testing remain an unresolved issue in the negotiations due to political and not necessarily due to scientifically different views.
