While a communicative approach for decades has been on the agenda of foreign and second language teaching, new insights into the importance of identity and the learning context for the language learning process pose a challenge for communicative language teaching. In this lecture some of these challenges will be investigated based on analyses of data from the teaching of Danish as a second language.
