 Presentation abstract

A central element of global health is the matter of equity; a discussionwith roots in colonialist endeavors, equally relevant at all levels of thefield today and in the future. By disassembling constituting elements ofglobal health, it becomes clear how the contemporary field is based onand biased in Global North cultures and traditions, which frames theEurocentric perspective as the neutral and the norm, and thereforesolutions and strategies for combating global risks are customised tofit societies of the Global North. Contemporary interventionsundertaken in the name of promoting global health represent enduringchallenges and new trends relating to international efforts to improvehealth conditions, primarily in the Global South. This talk will focus onboth sides of the encounter, the agents of intervention, healthprofessionals and the targets, local populations emphasising ethno-racialrepresentations and the burden of ‘otherness’ because theintervention power dynamics influence both. With a broad perspectiveon historical continuity and ruptures, we will explore the legacies ofmistrust in colonial medicine, postcolonial approaches, and integrationof the local, traditional health practices. In the quest for global healthequity, we invite you to focus the decolonisation process through fourlevels: knowledge, leadership, policy, and praxis.
