Beskrivelse

The paper introduces recent research on urbanity and performance – for instance how art and design in public space engage people and how urban spaces are negotiated and transformed through art, performances and every day use. The paper is based on recent case studies in Latin America under the title: The Emergent City. The study focus on urban interventions, activism, DIY culture, performance and design, and how interventions may change the city and the public sense of space. The cases include material from Copenhagen, the Distortion Festival and Metroplis, temporary occupations of the Highway Minhocao in Sao Paulo and participatory design tactics in the streets of Lapa, Rio. The cases will be framed within my research project The Emergent City and will open up for a discussion on global gentrification in cities worldwide, and what role of street performance, art and designs plays as counter cultures.
