Aspects of Labelling Dynamics for Discriminatory Conventions

This paper shows how evolutionary dynamics as a model for learning explains the emergence of conventions in the game theoretic programme of social conventions originating with David Lewis. It then goes on to give an instructive model of discriminatory conventions, showing how the standard assumption of classical game theory which holds that only the standard mathematical properties of game models are relevant, does not hold when considering evolutionary or learning dynamics. Finally, it shows that while one would think that such dynamics necessarily leads to Pareto-improvements relative to the initial points of such processes this may not be the case when paying attention to dynamics working at the level of the descriptions of conventions.
