Thomas P. Boje, born in 1944. MA in Soci­ology from Copenhagen University, Den­mark, 1972 and Ph. D in Business Administra­tion from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, 1987.

He has worked at Roskilde Uni­versity since 1972. First, as Associate Pro­fessor and from 1988 as Reader in social sciences.

Full Professor of sociology and la­bour market studies at Umeå University, Sweden 1995 - 2001.

From 2001 - Thomas P. Boje has been full professor in social science (welfare state and labour market) at Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University, Denmark

Thomas P. Boje was head of Department for Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University 1988 - 1990. In the period 1996 - 1998 he has been member of the Swedish Council of Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (HSFR) and in the years 1999 - 2001 he was member of the Swedish Council of Social Research (SFR). From 2003 he has been chairman for the board of the Danish Ph.D. School on ‘Velfærdsstaten og Forskellighed' and in 2002-03 he has been member of the international committee appointed by the Swedish ‘Högskoleverket' to evaluate the Swedish education in Sociology. From 2007 Thomas P. Boje has been appointed External Examiner in sociology at National University of Ireland in Maynooth and member of the International Advisory Board of the REMESO Centre at Linköping University, Sweden (Centre of Excellence for Research on Migration, Economy, and Society).

Thomas P. Boje is regularly referee for Nordisk Kulturfond, Acta Sociologica, European Societies, and Riksbankens Jubilæumsfond, Norges Forskningsråd.

Thomas P. Boje held an "American Studies Fellowship" at Department of Sociology, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA in the academic year 1988-89 and a "Jean Monnet Fellowship" at Department of Political Science and Sociology at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy in 1992 - 93. In 1995 he was guest professor in European Forum at the European University Institute for one term.

During the recent years Thomas P. Boje has been guest professor at Karl-Franzen University, Department of Sociology, Graz, Austria, 2000, at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping, Theme ‘Culture and Work' 2003, and most recently at London School of Economics and Political Science, Centre for Civil Society, Department of Social Policy one term in 2006 followed by shorter stay in 2007 and 2008

Thomas P. Boje has recently been working on several comparative studies: one study focus­ing on employment, flexibility and caring regimes in Europe, another study focusing on the relationship between civil society, citizenship and social participation in Europe, and a third study analysing women's paid work, unpaid work and caring and how social and family policies respond to work-life conflicts in different Euro­pean welfare systems.

Thomas P. Boje has been head of several major research projects during the recent decade. Several of them have been comparative projects. He was the Swedish team leader for two TSER-EU projects: 1) Between Integration and Exclusion: A Comparative Study in Local Dynamics of Precarity and Resistance in Urban Contexts' 1998 - 2000 chaired by Daniel Bertaux, CNRS and EHESS, Paris, France, 2) ‘Households, Work and Flexibility' 2001 - 2003 chaired by Claire Wallace, HIS, Vienna, Austria, the Danish team leader of the EU FP6 project ‘WORKCARE' 2006-2009. Furthermore Thomas P. Boje is the international coordinator of the EU FP6 Network of Excellence ‘Civil Society and New Forms of Governance in Europe - the making of European Citizenship' including 42 European research institutions and universities from 15 EU Member States. Thomas P. Boje has been co-editor for Acta Socio­logica in 1988 - 90 and again in 2004 - 2006 and Editor in Chief for the journal "European Societies" (1999 - 2001). He is presently co-editor for Dansk Sociologi (1993 -) Thomas P. Boje is one of the founders of the European Sociological Association and has been a member of the executive committee for the European Socio­logical Asso­ci­ation in the period 1992 - 1999 where he had the posi­tions of Treasurer and Chair of the Publica­tion Committee (1997-1999). He has again been elected member of the Executive Board of the European Sociological Association 2007-2009.

The CINEFOGO Network of Excellence (EU project 2005-513350) is concerned with the importance of improving citizens' participation in governance. This requires new knowledge on the role of multiple identities, active citizenship and organized civil society - see http://www.cinefogo.org/

CINEFOGO is a consortium consisting of 40 universities and research institutes, and a number of public service institutions in 15 European countries. The Network includes about 100 individual researchers. Almost half of these are women. The international coordinator is professor Thomas P. Boje with a secretariat located at Roskilde University, Department of Society and Globalization.

The CINEFOGO's mission is to generate and spread knowledge on the evolution of citizenship and multiple identities in Europe, and addressing civic apathy and social exclusion in Europe. CINEFOGO has organized the activities by giving focus on research, education and public debates within three thematic areas: "Identities, Values, and Civic Cultures - Integration and Diversity", "Citizenship and Civic Participation in Relation to Social Protection", "Multi-level Governance and Organized Civil Society".

In order to accomplish its mission, CINEFOGO has set up two equally important programmes: A programme for Integrating Research Activities and a programme for Spread of Excellence. The first is dedicated to the enhancement of integrating research activities and jointly executed research in the Network whereas the latter is inspired by the vision of an ongoing dialogue nourished by social scientists and affiliated partners from the public sphere and organized civil society.

WORKCARE - Social Quality and the Changing relationship between work, care and welfare in Europe (EU project 2006-028361) explores the relationship between structural changes, labour market, demography, welfare and economic policies at the marco level and at the micro level changes in the individual orientations to work and care.

The project looks at the different actors involved in balancing work and care: the household, individuals and the state. The work in the project will be based on the analysis of relevant indicators from existing data sources on welfare policies as well as on the socio-economic development. These analyses will be supplemented by qualitative interviews of households with dependent children in seven countries: Austria, Italy, Poland, Portugal, the UK, Hungary and Denmark.

The project will introduce methodological as well as theoretical innovations in the combination of policy analysis, qualitative and quantitative research to understand models of change and hence the development of different European Social Models. Finally, it will contribute to European policy debates by providing a better understanding of the impact of social policies on work and care, the effects of the competing demands of work and care on fertility decisions and the consequences of flexibility and working times in the organization of work, care and welfare.

The main goals of the WORKCARE project can be summarized as following:

• To describe and explain a European-wide patterning of welfare, work and care using a variety of methods and sources
• To develop and apply a social quality perspective, enabling a synthesis of macro and micro levels of analysis
