Research areas

My interests lie in urban studies, geography, planning and critical theory. My research explores how urban spaces are socially produced, imagined, performed and contested, and it is concerned in particular with the possibilities of urban society and life, and with how these can be reimagined and reconstituted within and against processes of capitalist urbanisation.

One of my key aims has been to rethink and revitalise the concept of utopia for urban studies, especially through addressing 20th-century modernist and avant-garde movements as well as critical urban theory (including through my book Visions of the City). I also have current projects on nomadic and mobile urbanism, and on artistic practices as means of exploring and intervening in cities. Long-standing interests that I am developing in this regard include psychogeography, walking art and radical cartographies. See also my profile at: https://ruc-dk.academia.edu/DavidPinder

I joined RUC in August 2015, having previously taught at Queen Mary University of London for sixteen years. My BA and PhD were both from the University of Cambridge, after which I taught at the University of Southampton for four years. I have held visiting positions at Princeton University (at the Shelby Cullom Davis Center) and at CUNY Graduate Centre in New York (at the Center for Place, Culture and Politics), and I was previously a Velux Visiting Professor at RUC in 2011.

Research and teaching information

I am currently teaching across a number of programmes: Geography; Plan, By og Proces; Spatial Designs and Society; and the International Bachelor Study Programme in Social Sciences. I am interested in supervising projects on urban and cultural questions relating to my interests outlined above. To date I have supervised thirteen PhD students to successful completion, and I am currently supervising five others. I welcome interest from prospective doctoral students in research areas relating to my own.
